One air mile has no fixed rupee value. Our method: cash fare minus cash still paid, divided by miles used; floor value for scoring, transfer ratios counted, from official terms.
Quick Verdict
One air mile has no fixed rupee value. It is worth whatever cash fare it saves you, minus the cash you still pay, divided by the miles you spend. IndiGo, for example, says the value of a BluChip "is dynamic and will depend on the flight route, booking window etc."
So when we work out the value of air miles in rupees, we do not use one magic number. We use a floor value, the lowest rupee value the issuer or programme itself publishes, for scoring. If no official floor exists, we mark the value as unknown and score the card conservatively. Better redemptions are shown as upside, never baked into the score. This is our method as of November 2026.
Currency | Official value we can confirm | How we treat it |
|---|---|---|
IndiGo BluChips | No fixed value; "dynamic", by route and booking window | Unknown; scored conservatively |
Air India Maharaja Points | Award prices from 1,500 points on domestic routes; no rupee value published | Calculated per trip; unknown for scoring |
Accor ALL Reward points | 2,000 points = €40 off a bill (about €0.02 a point) | Fixed floor, converted to ₹ at the day's rate |
Marriott Bonvoy points | Points per night vary by hotel, room, dates and length of stay | Unknown; scored conservatively |
Axis Atlas EDGE Miles | ₹1 a mile on Axis Travel EDGE | ₹1 floor; transfers are upside |
Kotak Air Miles | ₹1 a mile on Kotak Unbox (up to 80% of a booking); ₹0.5 on vouchers | ₹0.5 floor, ₹1 for Unbox users |
Why Air Miles Need a Different Method
A cashback rupee is a rupee. A bank reward point usually has a catalogue or statement-credit value printed in the bank's terms. We covered that in How to Calculate the Real Value of 1 Reward Point, and we will not repeat it here.
Airline miles and hotel points are different in three ways:
The price moves. The same seat or room can cost a different number of points on different dates.
You still pay cash. Taxes, fees and add-ons are often not covered by points.
There is a conversion step. Bank points or miles often move to the airline or hotel at a ratio, sometimes with a fee and a yearly cap.
Programmes say this openly. HDFC Bank's IndiGo migration FAQ states that BluChips "can be redeemed only against the fare of the ticket excluding 6E Add-ons, redemption fee, convenience fees and statutory taxes and levies." BOBCARD and IndiGo both describe their miles or BluChips as having no monetary value. Marriott's terms say the points needed per night vary by property, room type, length of stay and time of year.
How Much Is One Air Mile Worth in Rupees? Our Formula
For any single redemption, we use one formula:
Value per mile = (cash price of the same booking − cash you still pay on the award) ÷ miles or points used
Three rules keep it honest:
Compare like for like. Use the cash fare for the same flight, cabin and date, from the airline's own site, on the same day you check the award.
Subtract every rupee you still pay. Taxes, fees, convenience charges, and the bank's transfer fee if you moved points.
Count the conversion. If 1 bank mile becomes 2 airline miles, the value per bank mile is double the value per airline mile. If 2 bank miles become 1 hotel point, it is half.
Worked example (illustrative numbers)
Air India says on its official site that award flights on domestic routes start at 1,500 Maharaja Points, and that it cut Delhi–Goa economy from 9,000 to 5,000 points. Air India calls these figures indicative and subject to availability. Now suppose, purely for illustration, that the same Delhi–Goa economy flight costs ₹7,000 in cash, and that you would still pay ₹1,200 in taxes and fees on the award ticket.
Step | Figure |
|---|---|
Cash fare for the same flight (illustrative) | ₹7,000 |
Cash still paid on the award (illustrative) | ₹1,200 |
Rupees actually saved | ₹5,800 |
Maharaja Points used (Air India's indicative figure) | 5,000 |
Value per point | ₹1.16 |
Change one input and the answer moves. If the cash fare that day were ₹4,500, the same 5,000 points would save ₹3,300, or ₹0.66 a point. That spread is why we never print a single "1 mile = ₹X" figure for airline programmes without an official basis.
How Transfer Ratios Change the Value
Many travel cards earn the bank's own currency, which you then move to partners. The ratio decides what each bank point or mile is worth after the move.
Axis Bank's Travel EDGE terms are a good example. On the Atlas card, the ratio to most airline partners is 1 EDGE Mile to 2 partner points, but to Accor's ALL it is 2 EDGE Miles to 1 ALL point. Axis also says each Atlas EDGE Mile is worth ₹1 when you book on Travel EDGE.
10,000 Atlas EDGE Miles used as… | What you get | Rupee value |
|---|---|---|
Axis Travel EDGE booking | ₹10,000 of bookings | ₹10,000 (fixed, official) |
Transfer to ALL (2:1) | 5,000 ALL points = €100 | About ₹10,000 at an illustrative ₹100 per euro |
Transfer to an airline partner at 1:2 | 20,000 airline miles | Depends on the award; worth more than ₹10,000 only if each airline mile saves you over ₹0.50 |
That last row is the break-even test. Before a transfer, work out the floor value you would give up, then check that the award beats it after taxes and the transfer fee. Axis lists a ₹199 plus taxes fee per transfer on cards such as Atlas, and its terms say transfers cannot be reversed. For the full Axis partner list and caps, see Axis EDGE Miles Transfer Partners: Accor Returns, ITC Removed.
Floor Value vs Ceiling Value
We split every travel currency into two numbers.
Floor value: the lowest value the issuer or programme officially guarantees. Examples: ₹1 per Atlas EDGE Mile on Travel EDGE; ₹0.5 per Kotak Air Mile on vouchers and ₹1 on Kotak Unbox; 1.5 HSBC Taj points to ₹1 in the Taj wallet; 5 Scapia coins to ₹1 on the Scapia app; €40 per 2,000 Accor points.
Ceiling value: what a skilled user can sometimes get, such as a business-class award on a date when cash fares are high. It is real, but it depends on seat availability, timing and effort.
The floor goes into the score. The ceiling goes into the article text, labelled as "possible upside". A score has to hold for the typical cardholder, not only for the best-case redemption.
How Hotel Points Fit the Same Method
Hotel programmes fall into two groups.
Fixed-value hotel points
Accor's ALL is the clearest case. Accor's own site shows 2,000 Reward points taken off a bill as €40. That gives a fixed €0.02 a point, so the rupee value only moves with the exchange rate. HSBC's Taj card pays points worth ₹1 for every 1.5 in the Taj wallet, but only for IHCL stays, food and spa.
Dynamic hotel points
Marriott Bonvoy has no fixed value. Its terms say the points needed per night vary by hotel, room type, length of stay and time of year, and change continuously. For these, we use the same formula as for flights, per booking: cash rate for the same room and night, minus anything you still pay, divided by points used. For scoring, the rupee value of a Bonvoy point stays "unknown", and we judge the card on how usable the points are.
What Value Do We Use in the Benchmarksutra Score?
Air miles and hotel points touch three rows of our Benchmarksutra Credit Card Score.
Score row (max) | What the mile value does | Rule we follow |
|---|---|---|
Reward Value (20) | Turns the earn rate into an effective ₹ return | Floor value only; if none, "unknown" and a conservative score |
Redemption Quality (10) | Rewards flexibility: partners, minimums, fees, expiry | Single-airline currencies with short expiry score lower |
Hidden Costs and Conditions (10) | Captures devaluation risk and transfer caps | Partner changes and dynamic pricing count against the card |
You can see this in scores we have published. For IndiGo Axis, Miles & More Axis and BOBCARD Etihad Guest, the issuer or programme publishes no rupee value per mile, so each score lists that as an unknown and keeps Reward Value modest. For Kotak Air, Kotak publishes ₹1 a mile on Unbox and ₹0.5 on vouchers, so we can put a number on the return.

How to Value Your Own Miles Before You Redeem
Price the cash ticket first. Same flight, cabin and date, on the airline's own site.
Price the award. Note points needed and every rupee still payable.
Run the formula. Rupees saved ÷ points used.
Compare with your floor. If the bank pays ₹1 a mile on its own portal, an award worth ₹0.70 a mile is a loss.
Check validity. HDFC's FAQ says IndiGo BluChips are valid for 24 months from credit. Points you cannot use before expiry are worth nothing.
For step-by-step redemption, see Reward Points 101: How to Redeem Points for Free Travel.
Checklist
Find the official floor value of your card's currency in the bank's terms.
Check the transfer ratio for your exact card, not a different variant.
Add the transfer fee and any yearly cap to your sums.
Price the cash fare on the same day and for the same flight.
Subtract taxes, fees and add-ons you still pay on the award.
Redeem only if the result beats your floor value.
Note the expiry date of miles or vouchers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Using a blogger's "1 mile = ₹X" figure
Airlines such as IndiGo say the value is dynamic. A fixed number from an unofficial source can mislead you by a wide margin.
Mistake 2: Ignoring cash you still pay
An award that leaves taxes and fees to pay saves less than the headline fare.
Mistake 3: Transferring without a booking in hand
Axis transfers cannot be reversed. Check award availability first.
Mistake 4: Forgetting the ratio
A 2:1 ratio halves your value per bank mile. A 1:2 ratio doubles it.
Mistake 5: Letting miles expire
BluChips last 24 months from credit, per HDFC's FAQ, and some voucher rewards last less.
FAQs
How much is one air mile worth in rupees?
There is no fixed figure. It equals the rupees a redemption saves you, after any cash you still pay, divided by the miles used. IndiGo says BluChip value depends on route and booking window.
Is one IndiGo BluChip worth ₹1?
No official source says so. HDFC Bank's FAQ, quoting the programme, says the value of a BluChip is dynamic and depends on the flight route and booking window.
How much is an Accor ALL point worth?
Accor shows 2,000 Reward points as €40 off a bill, which is about €0.02 a point. The rupee value moves with the euro exchange rate.
Do award tickets cover taxes?
Often not fully. IndiGo BluChips cover only the fare, excluding add-ons, redemption fees, convenience fees and statutory taxes, according to HDFC Bank's FAQ.
What value does benchmarksutra use when scoring travel cards?
We use the lowest value the issuer or programme officially publishes. If none exists, we mark the value unknown and score the card conservatively.
Should I transfer bank points to an airline?
Only when the award is worth more per bank point than the bank's own fixed redemption value, after transfer fees and taxes. Transfers at Axis are final.
Are hotel points worth more than air miles?
Neither is better by default. Fixed-value points like Accor's are easy to value; dynamic programmes like Marriott Bonvoy need a per-booking calculation.
