First Credit Card for Young Professionals (2026)
Summary

Best first credit card for young doctors, CAs and lawyers: IDFC FIRST Millennia for most, AU CA Metal for CAs, Doctor's SBI Card for doctors. Scored from official terms.

Quick Verdict

For most young doctors, CAs and lawyers, the best first credit card for young professionals is a lifetime-free all-rounder such as the IDFC FIRST Millennia Credit Card: no fee, zero forex markup and an income bar of ₹3 lakh a year. Add a profession card only if it pays you back: the AU CA Metal Credit Card for chartered accountants, or the Doctor's SBI Card for doctors who want bundled professional indemnity cover.

We found no lawyer-specific card on the official bank pages we checked, so young lawyers should pick from the all-rounders. Your bigger decision is not the card. It is whether you apply as a salaried employee or as a self-employed professional, because banks judge the two very differently. All terms below are from official bank pages, as of November 2026.

Salaried or Self-Employed: Which One Are You to a Bank?

Young professionals often sit in both camps. A resident doctor at a hospital, an associate at a CA firm or a junior at a law firm is usually salaried. A doctor who has started a clinic, a CA who has set up practice or an advocate with their own briefs is self-employed. Banks ask for different proof in each case.

Your situation

What banks usually ask for

What to watch

Salaried (resident doctor, CA firm associate, law firm junior)

Latest payslip or Form 16; Axis lists "payslip / Form 16 / IT Return" as income proof for Privilege

Age bands for salaried applicants often stop at 60; income bars are usually monthly gross figures

Self-employed (own clinic, own practice, independent advocate)

Income tax return (ITR); IDFC FIRST accepts ITR as proof for Millennia

Some banks set a higher minimum age for self-employed applicants: 25 at AU and at SBI Card under its policy

Just qualified, no payslip or ITR yet

No income proof needed for an FD-backed card

The card limit is tied to your fixed deposit

The self-employed age floor catches people out. AU lists self-employed applicants from 25 years for the CA Metal card, and SBI Card's issuance policy uses 25 to 70 for the self-employed. A 23-year-old CA who has just started a practice may do better applying on a salary slip from a firm, or with an FD-backed card.

The Best First Credit Cards for Young Professionals, Card by Card

1. IDFC FIRST Millennia: the safe first card for any profession

Millennia is lifetime free with no spend condition, so you do not have to hit a target in a busy residency or audit season. Its bar is an annual income of ₹3 lakh or more, and IDFC FIRST lets self-employed applicants use their ITR.

  • Rewards: 3 points per ₹200 on most spends; 10 points per ₹200 on dining, travel and international spends; 1 point = ₹0.25

  • Why it suits professionals: zero forex markup helps with conferences abroad, foreign journal subscriptions and software billed in dollars

  • Watch for: ₹99 + GST per redemption; no points on fuel, EMI or cash withdrawals

Benchmarksutra Score: 77/100 — B Tier

2. AU CA Metal Credit Card: best for chartered accountants

AU built this card for CAs. It is lifetime free, and it pays a flat 25% cashback on your annual ICAI membership fee when you pay it with the card. The cashback is on the fee before GST, once per card anniversary year, and arrives within 60 days.

  • Rewards: 8 points per ₹100 on dining, travel, tax payments and software purchases (up to 5,000 points a statement cycle); 2 points per ₹100 on retail; 1 point per ₹100 on utilities, telecom and insurance

  • Welcome: 2,000 bonus points on ₹5,000 spend within 30 days; a Swiggy One quarterly membership on ₹10,000 within 30 days

  • Perks: 2 domestic lounge visits a quarter if the card is purchase-active; ₹50 lakh air accident cover; 1.99% forex markup

  • Eligibility: salaried 21 to 60, self-employed 25 to 75, resident Indian

  • Watch for: no points on rent, fuel, education, government, EMI or BBPS payments; AU does not state a rupee value per point

Benchmarksutra Score: 74/100 — B Tier

3. Axis Bank Privilege: a free all-rounder for young lawyers

With no lawyer-specific card on offer, a young advocate needs a strong general card. Axis lists Privilege at ₹NIL joining and annual fee on the Visa network as a limited-period offer. Its primary age band of 18 to 70 is wide, and Axis accepts a payslip, Form 16 or ITR as income proof.

  • Rewards: 10 EDGE REWARD points per ₹200, roughly 1% at our point value

  • Milestone: 10,000 extra points, which Axis values at ₹2,000, on ₹2.5 lakh of spend in a card anniversary year

  • Watch for: 3.5% forex markup; lounge and movie benefits need quarterly spends; 1% fee on rent transactions

  • Check: that the Visa variant still shows ₹NIL on the day you apply

Benchmarksutra Score: 71/100 — B Tier

4. HDFC Bank Millennia: for salaried juniors who shop online

If most of your spending is on Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato and Uber, Millennia pays 5% on 10 listed apps and 1% elsewhere, as CashPoints worth ₹1 each against the statement. HDFC's eligibility page lists salaried applicants aged 21 to 60 with gross monthly income above ₹25,000.

  • Fee: ₹1,000 + GST, waived at ₹1 lakh of yearly spend

  • Caps: each earn bucket stops at 1,000 CashPoints a month, so the 5% rate ends at ₹20,000 of app spend

  • Watch for: the self-employed income figure on HDFC's eligibility page does not match earlier HDFC figures; confirm it before applying

Benchmarksutra Score: 70/100 — B Tier

5. Doctor's SBI Card: for doctors who value indemnity cover

This is the only open doctor-specific card we found on an official issuer page. Its headline is professional indemnity insurance: the card's insurance terms cover claims of negligence in professional service, legal and defence costs, out-of-court settlements and court awards. Add-on cardholders are not covered.

  • Fee: ₹1,499 + GST a year; SBI Card's MITC waives the renewal fee on annual spends of ₹2 lakh or more

  • Rewards: 1 point per ₹100; 5 points per ₹100 at travel agents, on medical supplies, on international spends and on Doctors' Day (1 July)

  • Perks: 4 complimentary Priority Pass lounge visits a year outside India (max 2 a quarter)

  • Watch for: 3.5% forex markup; no points on fuel, rent or government payments; SBI's terms say points have no fixed cash value

  • Check: the cover amount. SBI's product page lists ₹10 lakh; its brochure lists ₹20 lakh per card. Ask SBI Card which applies before you count on it

Card-based cover is not a substitute for a full professional indemnity policy sized to your speciality. Treat it as a top-up.

Checklist

  • Decide whether you apply as salaried or self-employed, and gather the matching proof.

  • Check the self-employed minimum age (25 at AU and in SBI Card's policy).

  • Confirm the fee on the bank's page on the day you apply, especially limited-period offers.

  • For a profession card, confirm what membership proof the bank needs (ICAI, IMA or medical registration).

  • Read the Key Fact Statement for the interest rate and charges.

  • Pay professional fees (ICAI, council renewals) on the card only if you will pay the bill in full.

  • Set autopay for the full amount due before the first statement.

  • Keep business and personal spends easy to tell apart for your ITR.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Picking a card for a perk you will not use

The 25% ICAI cashback is worth it only if you pay your renewal by card. Indemnity cover helps only if the amount and terms suit your practice.

Mistake 2: Applying as self-employed too early

With one ITR or none, a new practice can look thin to a bank. A salary slip from your last job, or an FD-backed card, may be the easier route.

Mistake 3: Running practice costs on the card and carrying a balance

Card interest is far costlier than most business borrowing. Use the card for float, not for funding a clinic or office.

Mistake 4: Treating card insurance as your only cover

Card-linked indemnity can change or end with the card. Keep a separate professional indemnity policy.

FAQs

What is a good first credit card for a young doctor, CA or lawyer?

A lifetime-free all-rounder such as IDFC FIRST Millennia suits most young professionals. CAs should also look at the lifetime-free AU CA Metal card, and doctors at the Doctor's SBI Card if they want bundled indemnity cover.

Is there a credit card specially for doctors in India?

Yes. The Doctor's SBI Card in association with IMA is open, at ₹1,499 + GST a year. HDFC's Doctor's Regalia and Doctor's Superia cards are closed to new applicants.

Is there a credit card for chartered accountants?

Yes. AU Small Finance Bank's AU CA Metal card is lifetime free and gives 25% cashback on the annual ICAI membership fee. ICAI's member benefits page also lists a lifetime-free BOBCARD card for ICAI members.

Is there a credit card for lawyers?

We found no lawyer-specific card on the official bank pages we checked. Young lawyers should choose a general card such as IDFC FIRST Millennia or Axis Privilege.

Can a self-employed professional with a new practice get a credit card?

Yes, but banks usually ask for an ITR and some set a minimum age of 25 for the self-employed. With no ITR yet, an FD-backed card needs no income proof.

Does the Doctor's SBI Card replace professional indemnity insurance?

No. SBI's own pages show different cover amounts (₹10 lakh and ₹20 lakh), and add-on cardholders are not covered. Treat it as extra cover and confirm the amount with SBI Card.
