Hall Effect, Analog Optical or Mechanical: What Is the Difference?

Standard mechanical switches register a press when two metal contacts touch, at a fixed point. The G413 SE's tactile switch, for example, actuates at 1.9 mm. You cannot change it.

Hall effect (magnetic) switches put a magnet in each key and a sensor under it, so the keyboard knows how far the key has moved. That allows two things:

  • Adjustable actuation: you choose where the press counts. The Kreo Hive 75 HE lets you set each key from 0.1 to 4.0 mm.

  • Rapid trigger: the key resets the moment it starts to rise, so fast taps on movement keys register sooner.

Analog optical switches do the same job with light instead of a magnet. The Razer Huntsman V3 Pro uses them. It is not a Hall effect keyboard, but it also has adjustable actuation and rapid trigger.

Do you need one? For fast competitive shooters, yes. For casual play, MMOs and strategy games, a good standard mechanical board is fine and often cheaper.

How Did We Rate These Gaming Keyboards?

Every keyboard gets seven ratings out of 10. The gaming profile weights Gaming performance (polling, adjustable actuation, rapid trigger) at 30; Typing feel, Build quality and Software at 15 each; Ergonomics and India value at 10 each; and Connectivity & battery at 5, so wired boards are not punished much.

Score = sum of (rating × weight) ÷ 10. Tiers: S 90+, A 80–89, B 70–79, C 60–69, D below 60. No lab latency figures were used.

Not scored: the Wooting 60HE and 80HE, SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Gen 3 and Logitech G PRO X TKL RAPID. None was in stock at an Indian retailer on 5 November 2026: Wooting sells direct only, and the other two showed "currently unavailable" or notify-me pages. We will score them if they return.

Best gaming keyboard scores in India, out of 100

Best Gaming Keyboard in India by Budget

Under ₹2,000: Cosmic Byte Pandora (70, B)

At ₹1,599 on Flipkart, the Pandora is the only board under ₹2,000 that reaches 70: a wired TKL with hot-swap Outemu Blue switches. The EvoFox Katana X2 TKL (67, C, ₹1,699) and Ant Esports MK1200 Mini (66, C, ₹1,099) fall short.

₹2,000–5,000: Kreo Hive 75 HE (82, A)

The strongest band. The Hive 75 HE gets a 10/10 Gaming performance rating at ₹3,899 on Flipkart. The 65% EvoFox Ronin HS65 (79, B, ₹3,799 on Flipkart) is the other Hall effect option; see Kreo Hive 75 HE vs EvoFox Ronin HS65. For wireless, the Kreo Swarm 75 (77, B, ₹3,999) is the pick.

₹5,000–10,000: AULA F75 (79, B)

The AULA F75 and full-size AULA F108 Pro tie at 79; the F75 is cheaper at ₹5,418 on Amazon.in. No board in this band has adjustable actuation, and the ₹3,899 Hive 75 HE beats all of them. Spend here for wireless, typing feel or a numpad, not gaming speed.

Above ₹10,000: Razer Huntsman V3 Pro TKL 8KHz (87, A)

The Huntsman leads the list, with the wireless Keychron K2 HE one point behind. The low-profile Logitech G515 LIGHTSPEED TKL (82, A, ₹10,995 on Flipkart) ties the G915 X LIGHTSPEED (82, A, ₹18,995 on Amazon.in) for ₹8,000 less.

Who should skip: anyone who shares a room. Outemu Blues are clicky and loud, and Cosmic Byte does not publish the polling rate.

How to Choose a Gaming Keyboard

Which layout size should you pick?

TKL drops the numpad and frees mouse space. 75% keeps arrows and the F-row in a smaller body. 65% drops the F-row; 60% also drops the arrows. If you enter numbers at work, buy full-size.

Wired or wireless?

Wired is cheaper for the same speed, and every 8 kHz board we scored is wired. Go wireless if you also use a laptop or tablet; see our best wireless keyboard in India guide.

Does 8,000 Hz polling matter?

It helps most on high refresh rate monitors. Check that it is switched on in the software.

Checklist Before You Buy

  • Decide if you need adjustable actuation and rapid trigger.

  • Pick a layout: full-size, TKL, 75%, 65% or 60%.

  • Check whether you need wireless, and how many devices.

  • For hot-swap boards, check which switch types the sockets accept.

  • Check the warranty on the invoice, not just the brand page.

  • Compare Amazon.in, Flipkart and the brand store on the day you buy.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calling every rapid-trigger board Hall effect. The Huntsman V3 Pro uses analog optical switches.

  • Paying more for a slower board. Every board we scored from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 scores below the ₹3,899 Hive 75 HE on gaming.

  • Buying a 60% board for work. No arrows and no F-row make spreadsheets painful.

  • Trusting the MRP. Many listings show MRPs far above the selling price.

  • Buying clicky switches for a shared room. Blue switches are loud; pick linear or tactile.
