There is no single minimum salary for a credit card in India. Bank-wise income bars from HDFC, Axis, SBI Card, ICICI, IDFC FIRST and Kotak, plus the FD-backed route.
Quick Verdict
There is no single minimum salary for a credit card in India. Each bank sets its own bar for each card, and the lowest published bars we found on official pages start at about ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 a month for salaried applicants, or ₹2 lakh to ₹3.6 lakh a year of ITR income for the self-employed.
The minimum salary for credit card approval rises fast as cards get richer. HDFC's entry-level Freedom asks for a gross monthly income above ₹12,000. HDFC Regalia Gold asks for more than ₹1.5 lakh a month. Axis Atlas asks for ₹12 lakh a year if you are salaried. And if your income is low or irregular, an FD-backed card needs no income proof at all.
Income level | What you can usually apply for |
|---|---|
No income proof | FD-backed (secured) cards, such as IDFC FIRST WOW!, Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent or Axis MY Zone Easy |
₹12,000 to ₹25,000 a month | Entry cards such as HDFC Freedom (above ₹12,000 gross) or ICICI cards (₹20,000 a month on ICICI's main page) |
₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh a year | Mid cards such as IDFC FIRST Classic and Millennia, Kotak League Platinum, HDFC MoneyBack+ and Millennia |
₹12 lakh to ₹18 lakh a year | Travel and premium cards such as Axis Atlas, IDFC FIRST Select, HDFC Regalia Gold (self-employed ITR above ₹18 lakh) |
₹24 lakh a year and above | Super-premium cards such as Kotak Royale Signature (₹24 lakh), Kotak White (₹25 lakh) |
All figures are from bank pages as of November 2026. Banks call these criteria indicative and keep the final decision to themselves.

Why Is There No Single Minimum Salary?
RBI does not fix a minimum income for credit cards. Its Credit Cards and Debit Cards Directions, 2025 tell card-issuers to "independently assess the credit risk", "taking into account independent financial means of applicants". They also ask banks to set your credit limit after considering "all the limits enjoyed by the cardholder from other entities".
So each bank writes its own rules, card by card. Income is one input. The others are age, job type, city, your credit report and the loans you already carry.
For a family with a home loan and a car loan, that last point matters. SBI Card's public policy says the final limit is assigned "after factoring customer's actual or estimated monthly income and existing loans and Credit Card obligations" from your credit bureau record. Two people on the same salary can get very different answers.
Minimum Salary for Credit Card: Bank-Wise Table
These are the figures each bank publishes on its own pages. "Gross" means before deductions; "net" means in-hand. Where a bank's own page contradicts itself, we say so.

HDFC Freedom | Gross monthly income above ₹12,000 | ITR above ₹2 lakh a year | 21–60 salaried; 21–65 self-employed |
HDFC MoneyBack+ | Gross monthly income above ₹20,000 | ITR above ₹6 lakh a year | 21–60; 21–65 |

Bank-by-Bank Notes
HDFC Bank
HDFC publishes a clear eligibility page for each card. The lowest bar is Freedom: gross monthly income above ₹12,000, or ITR above ₹2 lakh a year if you are self-employed. That works out to about ₹1.44 lakh a year for salaried applicants.
Age limits are tighter than at some other banks: 60 for salaried applicants and 65 for the self-employed. If you are 58 and salaried, apply before you cross 60. The Millennia page shows two sets of figures, so check it again on the day you apply.
Axis Bank
Axis prints its rules on each card page and calls them "only indicative". Its primary cardholder age range of 18–70 is one of the widest we found. A 2024 Axis guide says many banks use ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month as a basic threshold, but the figure that counts is the one on your chosen card's page.
Axis also runs FD-linked cards: IndianOil Easy, Privilege Easy and MY Zone Easy. Its guide says MY Zone Easy needs a fixed deposit and no income proof.
SBI Card
SBI Card does not publish a minimum income on its product pages. Its public policy gives age bands instead: 21–65 for salaried and 25–70 for the self-employed. The same policy allows secured cards for SBI and partner-bank customers by marking a lien on a fixed deposit. Note the self-employed floor of 25: a 23-year-old who runs a family business may need to wait or choose another bank.
ICICI Bank
ICICI's main credit card page lists ₹20,000 a month for salaried applicants and ₹2.4 lakh a year for the self-employed. A table further down the same page lists ₹2.4 lakh and ₹3.6 lakh a year instead. Plan for the higher figure.
IDFC FIRST Bank
IDFC FIRST lists ₹3 lakh a year for Classic and Millennia, and ₹12 lakh for Select. Self-employed applicants can use their ITR as income proof. Its FD-backed FIRST WOW! card needs no income proof.
Kotak Mahindra Bank
Kotak's own guide lists card-wise income bars from ₹3 lakh a year (Urbane Gold, Fortune Gold, Feast Gold) to ₹25 lakh (White). Several cards, such as Essentia Platinum and Delight Platinum, show no minimum income. Kotak also limits many cards to listed cities, such as Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh.
Gross vs Net Salary: Which Number Do Banks Mean?
It depends on the card. HDFC Freedom, MoneyBack+ and Millennia use gross monthly income. Axis Atlas uses net annual income. HDFC's Regalia Gold page says gross in its criteria and net in its FAQ.
The safe rule: if your in-hand salary clears the bar, you qualify on either reading. If only your gross salary clears it, call the bank first.
What If You Are Self-Employed?
Banks read your income from your Income Tax Return, not your bank balance. HDFC asks for ITR above ₹2 lakh for Freedom and above ₹18 lakh for Regalia Gold. Axis asks self-employed Atlas applicants for ₹3 lakh more a year than salaried ones.
Shop owners, consultants and small-business families should file ITR every year, on time, and show the true income. Our guide How to Get a Credit Card as a Freelancer covers the paperwork.
Low or No Salary? The FD-Backed Route
A secured card is issued against a fixed deposit in your name. The bank marks a lien on the FD, so your income matters far less.
Card | Minimum FD (bank's own pages) | Income proof |
|---|---|---|
IDFC FIRST WOW! | ₹20,000 (check current page) | Not required |
Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent | ₹10,000 term deposit (Kotak guide) | Not required |
Axis MY Zone Easy | From ₹15,000 (Axis guide, 2024) | Not required |
SBI Card secured card | Lien on an SBI or partner-bank FD; amount not published | Check with SBI Card |
This suits a homemaker who wants her own credit record, a parent between jobs, or a young earner on a ₹10,000 stipend. Use it for a year, pay in full, and your CIBIL history starts to build. Our IDFC FIRST WOW! explainer walks through the maths.
Can a Family Member Use Your Card Instead?
Yes, through an add-on card. RBI's credit card directions say add-on cards go only to people the main cardholder names, and the main cardholder carries the liability. The spouse or child does not need to meet the income bar, but the bill is yours.
Checklist
Find the eligibility page of the exact card, not just the bank's home page.
Check whether the bar is gross monthly, net monthly or net annual income.
Check the age limit, especially if you are close to 60 and salaried.
If self-employed, keep the last two years of ITR ready.
Check that your city is on the bank's list.
Add up your EMIs; banks see every loan on your credit report.
Pull your free credit report and fix errors before applying.
If your income is below every bar, compare FD-backed cards.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Applying for the card you want, not the card you qualify for
A rejection shows up as a hard enquiry. Start with a card whose bar you clear with room to spare.
Mistake 2: Inflating income on the form
Banks check payslips, Form 16 or ITR. A mismatch can mean rejection.
Mistake 3: Applying to many banks in one week
Several enquiries close together can hurt your score. See how long to wait before reapplying. SBI Card's FAQ says you can normally apply again after three months.
Mistake 4: Ignoring existing EMIs
A ₹1 lakh salary with ₹60,000 of EMIs looks weaker than a ₹70,000 salary with none.
Mistake 5: Assuming RBI sets the minimum
It does not. Each bank decides, and the bars change. Recheck on the day you apply.
