ICICI wants ₹75,000 a quarter, HDFC Regalia Gold ₹60,000, Tata Neu ₹50,000. What changed, what each lounge spend condition costs you a year, and why banks moved to spend-linked visits.
Quick Verdict
Credit cards now need minimum spends for lounge access because banks have turned the lounge from a free card feature into a reward for active spending: you spend a set amount in one quarter, and visits unlock for the next. Banks rarely publish their reasons, but their own documents show that each lounge visit carries a real price (HDFC and SBI Card charge up to US$27 per Priority Pass visit when it is not free), and the spend gate ties that cost to customers who use the card.
As of November 2026, lounge access spend criteria at major banks range from ₹20,000 a billing cycle to ₹1 lakh a quarter.
Card | Spend condition | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
Most ICICI Bank cards | ₹75,000 in a calendar quarter | Domestic lounge access in the next quarter |
HDFC Regalia Gold | ₹60,000 in the previous calendar quarter | 3 domestic visits a quarter |
HDFC Diners Club Privilege | ₹60,000 in a quarter | 2 domestic + 1 international voucher for the next quarter |
HDFC Millennia | ₹1 lakh in a calendar quarter | 1 domestic visit or a ₹1,000 voucher (your choice) |
Tata Neu Infinity HDFC | ₹50,000 in a calendar quarter | 2 domestic vouchers (up to 8 a year) |
Tata Neu Plus HDFC | ₹50,000 in a calendar quarter | 1 domestic voucher (up to 4 a year) |
Axis My Zone and Axis Privilege | ₹50,000 in the previous 3 months | Domestic lounge access |
Scapia Axis | ₹20,000 net in a billing cycle | Lounge access, 3 to 5 working days after the billing date |
Lounge Access Spend Criteria: What Changed and When
The shift has come card by card, through dated notices on bank websites:
1 January 2025: ICICI made domestic lounge access on certain cards depend on ₹75,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter. Its premium Diamant, Emeralde range, MakeMyTrip and Times Black cards were left out of the change.
1 June 2025: HDFC began issuing Priority Pass on Tata Neu Infinity only on request.
10 June 2025: HDFC moved both Tata Neu cards to milestone-based domestic lounge vouchers, unlocked by ₹50,000 of spend in a quarter.
July–September 2026 quarter: HDFC Regalia Gold and Diners Club Privilege both began needing ₹60,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter. HDFC's example: April–June 2026 spends unlock July–September 2026 visits.

Why Do Credit Cards Now Need Minimum Spends for Lounge Access?
Banks do not usually explain the commercial reason in their public notices. Here is what their own documents show, followed by our reading.
What the documents show
Each visit has a price. HDFC's MITC says lounge visits within India on Priority Pass are charged at US$27 plus taxes per person, for cards including Regalia Gold and Tata Neu Infinity. SBI Card's KFS lists a usage fee of up to US$27 per visit for domestic Priority Pass visits.
Spend in one period unlocks the next. ICICI, HDFC and Axis all count spends in a past quarter or 3-month window.
Free access is moving to vouchers and claims. On Tata Neu cards you claim the voucher within 120 days of qualifying and use it within 180 days of issue.
Not all spends count. ICICI excludes rent, government, education, fee, interest and EMI transactions. HDFC excludes EMI transactions from the Regalia Gold lounge spend.
Our reading
A free lounge visit is a cost the bank pays whether or not the card earns anything. Tying visits to recent spend means the cost is carried mainly by cards that are actually used. It also caps how many visits a low-use card can generate. This is our interpretation of the published terms, not a reason any bank has stated.
What RBI requires when benefits change
RBI's credit card directions for banks say that withdrawal of benefits must be intimated to the cardholder immediately, with reasons, by SMS, email or other means. Changes in terms need 30 days' notice, and changes in charges need at least one month's notice. If a lounge benefit on your card changed without a message, ask your bank for the notice.
What the Spend Gate Really Costs You
A quarterly gate is easy to underestimate. Here is each condition as a yearly spend, if you want visits every quarter.
Condition | Monthly spend needed | Yearly spend needed |
|---|---|---|
₹20,000 per billing cycle (Scapia Axis) | ₹20,000 | ₹2,40,000 |
₹50,000 per quarter (Tata Neu, Axis My Zone/Privilege) | about ₹16,700 | ₹2,00,000 |
₹60,000 per quarter (Regalia Gold, Diners Privilege) | ₹20,000 | ₹2,40,000 |
₹75,000 per quarter (most ICICI cards) | ₹25,000 | ₹3,00,000 |
₹1 lakh per quarter (Millennia) | about ₹33,300 | ₹4,00,000 |
Spending more only to unlock a lounge rarely makes sense. If you would not spend ₹75,000 this quarter anyway, the "free" visit is not free. If you already spend that much, the gate costs you nothing.
How Travellers Should Respond
Count visits you actually need
If you fly four times a year, two domestic visits a quarter is more than enough. Do not pay a higher fee for more visits than you use.
Concentrate spend on one card
Splitting ₹70,000 a quarter across two ICICI cards unlocks neither. Put it on one card.
Time it to your trips
Spends in April–June unlock July–September at HDFC. Plan big purchases in the quarter before a trip.
Watch the network and the entry method
Some benefits come as vouchers you must claim; others need the card swiped at the lounge. HDFC Tata Neu Infinity's international Priority Pass is now issued only on request.

Checklist
Find your card's current lounge spend condition on the bank's own page.
Check whether the window is a calendar quarter, 3 rolling months or a billing cycle.
Check which spends are excluded (rent, EMI, government, education, wallets).
Check whether visits come by card swipe or by voucher you must claim.
Note claim and expiry windows for vouchers.
Check whether add-on cards share the visits.
Check the per-visit charge if you exceed the free visits.
Do not overspend to meet a gate.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Assuming last year's lounge rules still apply
Several cards changed in 2025 and 2026. Check the current terms before you travel.
Mistake 2: Counting EMI or rent towards the gate
ICICI excludes them, and HDFC excludes EMI on Regalia Gold.
Mistake 3: Spending in the wrong quarter
Spends unlock the next period, not the current one.
Mistake 4: Not claiming vouchers
On Tata Neu cards, a voucher not claimed within 120 days is lost.
Mistake 5: Using Priority Pass at Indian airports by default
HDFC and SBI Card can charge up to US$27 plus taxes per domestic Priority Pass visit.

Benchmarksutra Verdict
Spend-linked lounge access is now the norm on mid-range cards. The gate is harmless if your normal spending already clears it, and a trap if it pushes you to spend more.
Final rule: value a lounge benefit only if your usual quarterly spend already meets the condition.
