How Credit Card Cashback Is Credited to You
Summary

Statement credit, points you redeem, or partner wallet balance: how and when cashback reaches you on SBI, Axis, HDFC and Amazon Pay ICICI cards, from official terms.

Quick Verdict

Credit card cashback reaches you in one of three ways: as an automatic credit on your card statement, as points you must redeem yourself, or as balance in a partner's wallet. Timing depends on the card, but it usually lands with your next statement or in the first week of the next month, never on the day you pay.

Knowing how credit card cashback is credited on your own card matters more than the headline rate. It decides whether the money shows up by itself, whether you need to click "redeem", and whether a refund later pulls it back. This guide uses the official terms of four widely held cards, as of November 2026.

The Three Ways Cashback Is Credited

1. Automatic statement credit

The bank calculates your cashback for the cycle and posts it as a credit entry on your card account. You see a line like "cashback" on the statement. It lowers the balance shown on your next bill. You do nothing.

2. Cashback paid as points

Some cards call it cashback but pay it as points. HDFC's Millennia terms define cashback as "the CashPoints awarded in the customer's credit card account under the reward points scheme". You must log in and redeem those points against your statement.

Points models come with extra rules: a minimum balance to redeem, a monthly redemption cap, a fee per redemption and an expiry date. For how to value points in general, read How to Calculate the Real Value of 1 Reward Point.

3. Partner wallet or gift balance

Co-branded cards sometimes pay the reward into the partner's ecosystem. Amazon Pay ICICI is the best-known case: ICICI's page says rewards come as Amazon Pay balance. That balance can pay for purchases on Amazon and Amazon Pay. It does not reduce your credit card bill.

How Each Card Credits Cashback: Official Terms

CASHBACK SBI Card: straight to your card account

SBI Card's FAQ says cashback is "automatically credited to your SBI Card account" within two working days of the statement generation date, and shows on your monthly statement.

  • Rates: 5% on online spends and 1% on offline (POS) spends.

  • Caps from 1 April 2026: ₹2,000 a statement cycle on online, ₹2,000 on offline, ₹4,000 in total.

  • No cashback on Merchant EMI and Flexipay EMI, utility, insurance, fuel, rent, wallet, school and education, jewellery and railways, among others.

  • From 1 April 2026, digital gaming, tolls and government transactions also earn nothing.

  • Cashback is reversed if a purchase is cancelled, reversed or returned.

Flipkart Axis Bank Credit Card: credited before the next statement

Axis's cashback terms give a precise date. Cashback earned in one billing cycle is credited in the next cycle, three days before that statement is generated. Axis's own example: with a statement date of 15 February, cashback for the 16 January to 15 February cycle is credited on 12 March.

  • Myntra 7.5%, Flipkart 5% and Cleartrip 5%, each capped at ₹4,000 per statement quarter.

  • 4% at preferred merchants and 1% on other eligible spends, with no cap.

  • No cashback on transactions below ₹100, gift cards on Flipkart and Myntra, gold, EMI and post-facto EMI conversions, utilities, telecom, fuel, insurance, rent, wallet loads, education and government.

HDFC Bank Millennia Credit Card: CashPoints you redeem

HDFC's Millennia terms say CashPoints are posted on a calendar-month basis. Transactions settled between the 1st and the last day of the month are posted in the first week of the next month. HDFC's FAQ adds that the points are available to redeem after the next statement is generated.

  • 5% on Amazon, BookMyShow, Cult.fit, Flipkart, Myntra, Sony LIV, Swiggy, Tata CLiQ, Uber and Zomato, capped at 1,000 CashPoints a month.

  • 1% on other spends, capped at 1,000 CashPoints a month.

  • Redeem against the statement at 1 CashPoint = ₹1, minimum 500 CashPoints, up to 3,000 a month.

  • Since 1 August 2024, each statement-credit redemption costs ₹50.

  • Unredeemed CashPoints lapse after two years.

  • Using them on SmartBuy flights, hotels or the catalogue drops the value to ₹0.30 a point.

Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card: Amazon Pay balance

ICICI's page says rewards are credited to your Amazon account as Amazon Pay balance within two working days after your billing cycle ends. Prime members earn up to 5% on Amazon, non-Prime up to 3%, and other spends 1%. The card has no joining or annual fee.

Does Cashback Count as a Payment Towards Your Bill?

No, and this catches many people out. Axis's cashback terms say it plainly: credits the customer did not initiate, such as cashback or charge reversals, "will not be considered as a payment towards the outstanding of the card". They are counted only when the next month's dues are worked out.

In practice, if your bill is ₹20,000 and ₹500 of cashback lands after the statement, you still pay the full amount due on the current statement by the due date. SBI and HDFC do not state this rule in the pages we checked, so treat any cashback as a reduction to a later bill, not a payment.

Never let cashback push you towards paying only the minimum. See Why Paying Only the Minimum Amount Due Is Dangerous.

What Happens After a Refund, Return or EMI Conversion?

Cashback follows the purchase. If the purchase goes away, so does the cashback.

  • SBI: cashback is reversed on cancellations, reversals and returns.

  • Axis: a return in the same cycle reduces that cycle's cashback. A return after the statement date leads to a cashback debit on the date of the reversal. Converting a purchase to EMI later also pulls the cashback back.

  • HDFC: CashPoints are worked out on spends minus refunds in the same month. A return after the month closes is adjusted from later earnings. EMI spends earn nothing, even on the 10 partner merchants.

What the RBI Rules Say

The RBI's Credit Cards and Debit Cards Directions for commercial banks, dated 28 November 2025 and updated as on 1 October 2026, set three rules that touch cashback:

  • Benefits such as cashback and reward points must be provided in a transparent manner, with details on the bank's website and a copy given to the cardholder (para 72).

  • Before adjusting a credit from a refund, failed or reversed transaction above 1% of your limit or ₹5,000, whichever is lower, the bank must seek your consent. You can ask for credit balance to be paid to your bank account, and the bank must do it within three working days (para 31).

  • After a card is closed, any credit balance must be sent to your bank account (para 21).

The Directions do not guarantee unredeemed points. If cashback sits as points, redeem it before you close the card.

Checklist

  • Find out which of the three models your card uses: statement credit, points or partner wallet.

  • Note your statement date and the bank's stated credit date.

  • Check monthly or quarterly caps so you know when extra spending stops earning.

  • Read the exclusion list: fuel, rent, wallet loads, utilities, insurance and EMI are common.

  • On points cards, check the minimum to redeem, the redemption fee and the expiry.

  • Pay the full statement amount by the due date; do not count unposted cashback.

  • Redeem all points before closing a card.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Expecting cashback on the day you pay

None of these four cards credits instantly. Expect a wait of two to six weeks, depending on when in the cycle you spend.

Mistake 2: Treating cashback as a bill payment

Axis says cashback is not a payment towards your outstanding. Pay the statement in full.

Mistake 3: Letting CashPoints sit and lapse

Millennia CashPoints lapse after two years. Redeem in bulk, but redeem.

Mistake 4: Redeeming tiny balances

The ₹50 fee on every HDFC statement-credit redemption hurts small redemptions. Waiting until you can redeem closer to the 3,000-point monthly limit keeps the fee small in percentage terms.

Mistake 5: Ignoring caps

SBI stops at ₹4,000 a cycle; Millennia's 5% stops at 1,000 CashPoints a month. Read The Truth About 5% Cashback Cards and Monthly Caps.

FAQs

How is credit card cashback credited in India?

Either as a credit on your card statement, as points you redeem against the statement, or as balance in a partner wallet such as Amazon Pay. Your card's terms say which.

When is SBI Card cashback credited?

SBI Card says CASHBACK SBI Card cashback is credited automatically to your card account within two working days of the statement generation date.

When is Flipkart Axis Bank cashback credited?

In the next billing cycle, three days before the next statement date, per Axis's cashback terms.

Is HDFC Millennia cashback credited automatically?

No. It is posted as CashPoints in the first week of the next month. You redeem them against the statement at ₹1 each, with a 500-point minimum and a ₹50 fee per redemption.

Does cashback reduce my minimum amount due?

Not for the current statement. Axis states cashback is not treated as a payment towards the outstanding; it only reduces later dues. Pay your current bill in full.

What happens to cashback if I return a product?

The bank reverses it. SBI, Axis and HDFC all claw back cashback on returns, cancellations and, for Axis and HDFC, EMI conversions.

Can I lose cashback if I close my card?

RBI rules require any credit balance to be sent to your bank account after closure. Unredeemed points are not covered by that rule, so redeem them first.
