A lounge visit is worth up to ₹1,000 in India and up to US$27 abroad, only if you use it. How benchmarksutra turns lounge visits into rupees, with examples.
Quick Verdict
A free airport lounge visit is worth up to about ₹1,000 in India and up to US$27 abroad, but only if you would really use it. We take those caps from banks' own documents: HDFC lets Millennia holders pick one domestic lounge visit or a ₹1,000 voucher, and HDFC and SBI Card charge up to US$27 plus taxes for a Priority Pass visit that is not free. A visit you never take is worth ₹0.
That is how benchmarksutra puts a rupee value of airport lounge access when we compare cards. The headline "8 visits a year" matters far less than how many times you fly, and whether your normal spending already unlocks the visits.
Lounge visit | Our rupee value | Where the anchor comes from |
|---|---|---|
Domestic visit you will use | Up to ₹1,000 | HDFC Millennia: 1 domestic visit or a ₹1,000 voucher, your choice |
International Priority Pass visit you will use | Up to US$27 (before taxes) | HDFC MITC and SBI Card KFS per-visit charge |
Visit you will not use | ₹0 | It has no cash value |
Visit behind a spend gate you would not clear anyway | ₹0 | The spend is the real price |
Guest visit | ₹0 unless free; else a cost | HDFC charges US$27 + taxes per guest on Priority Pass |
Why Lounge Access Needs a Rupee Value
Card ads count lounge visits, not rupees. That makes a card with "12 lounge visits" look richer than a card with 2% cashback, even if the cashback is worth more to you.
To compare cards fairly, every benefit has to be turned into rupees a year. That is how our Benchmarksutra Credit Card Score works. Lounge access is one item in the Benefits & Perks category, and spend-linked unlocks are counted under Hidden Costs & Conditions. Our full approach is in How We Review Credit Cards.
How Much Is a Free Airport Lounge Visit Worth?
We use two official anchors and one rule.
Anchor 1: a domestic visit is worth up to ₹1,000
HDFC's Millennia quarterly milestone programme offers, on ₹1 lakh of spend in a calendar quarter, either one domestic lounge visit or a ₹1,000 voucher. When a bank itself offers the two as alternatives, it is a fair sign of what a domestic visit is worth to an ordinary cardholder. We treat ₹1,000 as the most a domestic visit is worth to you.
Anchor 2: an international visit is worth up to US$27
HDFC's MITC says lounge visits using Priority Pass beyond the free cap are charged at US$27 (in rupee equivalent) plus taxes per person. SBI Card's Key Fact Statement lists a usage fee of up to US$27 per visit. That is the price you would pay for a visit without the free benefit, so it is the ceiling. At an assumed rate of ₹88 to the US dollar, US$27 is about ₹2,376 before taxes. Use the day's rate for your own maths.
The rule: count only visits you will use
A free visit is worth what you would otherwise spend at the airport, up to the cap. If you would eat at home before a short flight, a lounge visit saves you nothing. If you would buy a meal and coffee at the airport, the visit replaces that spend.
So we value lounge access as: visits you will actually use × the lower of the cap or your usual airport spend.
Worked Examples: What Lounge Access Is Worth a Year
Here is the same benefit valued for four kinds of traveller. Domestic values use ₹1,000 a visit; international values use the assumed ₹2,376 a visit.
Traveller | Visits used a year | Value a year |
|---|---|---|
Fresher, flies home twice a year (2 departures) | 2 domestic | ₹2,000 |
Young professional, 6 work trips a year | 6 domestic | ₹6,000 |
Family of 3, one domestic holiday, card covers primary only | 1 domestic for primary; guests pay | ₹1,000 |
Frequent flyer, 8 domestic and 2 international departures | 8 domestic + 2 international | ₹8,000 + ₹4,752 = ₹12,752 |
A card that offers "unlimited" lounge access is worth the same as a card with 2 visits to the fresher in row 1. Extra visits you will not use add nothing.
How Do Spend Gates Change the Value?
Many cards now unlock lounge visits only after a minimum spend. Our guide Lounge Access Spend Criteria lists them. Some examples, as of November 2026:
Card | Spend condition | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
Scapia Axis Bank | ₹20,000 net in a billing cycle | Domestic lounge access |
Axis My Zone and Axis Privilege | ₹50,000 in the previous 3 months | Domestic lounge access |
HDFC Regalia Gold | ₹60,000 in the previous calendar quarter | 3 domestic visits a quarter |
HDFC Millennia | ₹1 lakh in a calendar quarter | 1 domestic visit or a ₹1,000 voucher |
Our rule for gates is simple:
If your normal spend already clears the gate: value the visits as above.
If you would have to spend more to clear it: value them at ₹0. Never count extra spending as a way to "earn" a lounge.
For a fresher spending ₹15,000 a month, a ₹50,000 three-month gate is out of reach. The lounge on that card is worth nothing to them today.
What About First Cards?
Most first credit cards include no free lounge access, or only gated access. HDFC Freedom, for example, lists no lounge access. That is fine. A fresher who flies twice a year gets at most about ₹2,000 a year from lounge visits, which is less than many annual fees.
So, for a first card:
do not pay a higher annual fee only for lounge access
prefer a lifetime-free card with simple rewards
treat any lounge visit as a bonus, not a reason to apply
Our Scapia card review shows how a zero-fee travel card handles lounges with a spend condition.
Lounge Access vs Points: Which Is Worth More?
Compare the yearly lounge value with what the same card's rewards would give you. Say a card offers 8 domestic visits but you use 2. That is ₹2,000 a year. If a similar card without lounges gives 1% more back on ₹2 lakh of yearly spend, that is also ₹2,000. The two cards are level on this point.

Checklist
Count the flights you took from Indian airports in the last 12 months.
Count only departures where you would arrive early enough to use a lounge.
Value each domestic visit at up to ₹1,000 and each Priority Pass visit at up to US$27.
Set unused and gated visits you would not unlock to ₹0.
Check whether visits come by card swipe, Priority Pass or a voucher you must claim.
Check whether add-on cardholders and guests are covered or charged.
Compare the total with the card's annual fee plus GST.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Counting visits, not trips
Eight visits are worth nothing extra if you fly twice a year.
Mistake 2: Valuing a visit at its highest price
The US$27 Priority Pass charge is a ceiling, not the value of a quick coffee at a domestic lounge.
Mistake 3: Ignoring spend gates
A visit that needs ₹60,000 of extra spend in a quarter is not free.
Mistake 4: Using Priority Pass in India by default
HDFC charges US$27 plus taxes for visits within India using Priority Pass on cards such as Regalia Gold and Tata Neu Infinity. Use the card or voucher route the bank specifies.
Mistake 5: Forgetting guests
Family members without their own access can cost US$27 plus taxes each on Priority Pass.
FAQs
How much is a free airport lounge visit worth?
Up to about ₹1,000 for a domestic visit and up to US$27 for an international Priority Pass visit, but only if you would really use it. Unused visits are worth ₹0.
Why does benchmarksutra use ₹1,000 for a domestic visit?
HDFC's Millennia milestone lets you choose one domestic lounge visit or a ₹1,000 voucher, so the bank itself treats them as alternatives.
What does a Priority Pass visit cost if it is not free?
HDFC's MITC lists US$27 (in rupee equivalent) plus taxes per person, and SBI Card's KFS lists up to US$27 per visit.
Is unlimited lounge access worth more?
Only if you fly often. A card with unlimited access is worth the same as a card with two visits to someone who flies twice a year.
Should a fresher choose a card for lounge access?
Usually not. Most first cards offer no free or only gated access, and two trips a year are worth about ₹2,000 at most.
Do add-on cardholders get free lounge visits?
It depends on the card. Some cover add-ons, while others restrict Priority Pass to the primary cardholder. Check your card's lounge terms.
