Travel Credit Card Rewards Explained: Miles, Points, Vouchers
Summary

Portal points, transferable miles, airline and hotel currencies, vouchers and coins: how travel card rewards work and what each is worth in rupees.

Quick Verdict

Travel credit card rewards work in one of four ways: bank points you redeem on the bank's travel portal, points or miles you transfer to airlines and hotels, a partner's own currency such as airline miles or hotel points, and fixed travel vouchers. The card advertises the earn rate; the real value depends on how you redeem.

That is the core of travel credit card rewards. The same 1,000 points can be worth ₹150 as statement cashback or ₹500 on a flight booking on the same card. Learn which type your card pays, and redeem the way that gives the most rupees back. As of November 2026, here is how the four types compare.

How Do Travel Credit Card Rewards Work?

Every travel card has two halves: how you earn and how you burn.

  • Earn: a base rate on most spends, a higher rate on travel bookings or foreign spends, and sometimes milestone bonuses for yearly spend.

  • Burn: one or more ways to redeem, each with its own rupee value per point.

The earn rate on the card's page tells you only half the story. A card that earns 4 points per ₹100 is not "4% back" unless each point is worth ₹1 where you redeem it. Our guide How to Calculate the Real Value of 1 Reward Point shows the method.

Type 1: Bank Points on the Bank's Travel Portal

This is the simplest type. You earn the bank's points and spend them on flights or hotels booked through the bank's own portal.

HDFC Regalia Gold is a clear example. HDFC lists these redemption values per Reward Point:

Redemption

Value per point

Exclusive Gold Catalogue

₹0.65

Flights and hotels on SmartBuy

₹0.50

Airmiles

Up to 0.5 airmile

Products and vouchers

Up to ₹0.35

Statement cashback

₹0.15

HDFC also limits points to 70% of a SmartBuy flight or hotel booking, caps flight and hotel redemptions per calendar month, and its Regalia Gold fees page lists a ₹99 plus taxes fee per redemption request.

Other banks use a fixed rupee value on their portal. Axis says each Atlas EDGE Mile is worth ₹1 on Travel EDGE. Kotak values Air+ Air Miles at ₹1 each on its Unbox travel platform, up to 80% of a booking.

Best for: people who want simple, predictable value without learning airline award charts.

Type 2: Points or Miles You Transfer to Partners

Some cards let you move points to airline or hotel loyalty programmes. The value can be higher than the portal, but it depends on the transfer ratio and how many partner points a flight or room costs.

Axis Bank's EDGE programme is the most detailed official example. Its transfer terms list card-wise ratios, two partner groups and yearly caps:

Axis card

Typical airline ratio

Accor ratio

Group A yearly cap

Atlas (EDGE Miles)

1:2

2:1

30,000

Magnus, Reserve (EDGE points)

5:2

5:1

1,00,000

Select, Privilege, Rewards (EDGE points)

10:1

10:1

1,00,000

Axis charges ₹199 per transfer, and transferred points cannot be reversed. HSBC TravelOne lets you convert reward points to air miles 1:1 in its app. Kotak Air+ transfers to airline partners at 2:1.

Use transfers only with a booking in mind. Check award seat availability first, then transfer.

Best for: frequent flyers who will learn award pricing and can book in advance.

Type 3: A Partner's Own Currency

Co-branded cards pay in the partner's currency directly: IndiGo BluChips, Etihad Guest Miles or Marriott Bonvoy points.

  • No fixed rupee value: Axis's IndiGo terms say BluChips have no monetary value, and BOBCARD says the same of Etihad miles. Value depends on route, dates and taxes.

  • Hotel points: Marriott Bonvoy points earned on the HDFC card do not expire as long as your Marriott account has activity at least once every 24 months, per HDFC's MITC.

  • Fixed-value exceptions: some programmes do fix a value. Accor's site shows 2,000 Reward points taken off a bill as €40. HSBC Taj points are worth ₹1 for every 1.5 points in the Taj wallet, but only at IHCL hotels.

The card's value rises and falls with the partnership. See our explainer on airline co-branded cards for current airline options.

Best for: loyal users of one airline or hotel group.

Type 4: Travel Vouchers

Many cards pay part of their value as vouchers: on joining, renewal or milestones. A voucher has a face value, but you get it only if you use it in full and on time.

  • IndiGo co-brand vouchers: Kotak's IndiGo terms say welcome, renewal and milestone vouchers are valid for 6 months, usable on one journey only, against the base fare, with any unused balance forfeited.

  • Hotel stay vouchers: HSBC credits Taj stay vouchers within 8 working days of activation or renewal, with listed hotel exclusions.

  • Free night awards: HDFC's Marriott Bonvoy card gives a Free Night Award worth up to 15,000 points on fee payment.

Value a voucher at what you would have paid for the trip it covers, not its face value.

Coins and App Currencies

A newer type sits between bank points and vouchers. The Scapia Axis Bank card earns Scapia Coins: Axis's terms set 5 coins = ₹1 for redemption on the Scapia app only, and say Scapia must give one month's notice before changing coin value. So 10 coins per ₹100 is 2% back, not 10%. Read our Scapia card review.

Worked Example: ₹1 Lakh of Spend on Four Travel Cards

Here is what ₹1,00,000 of eligible everyday spend earns, at the base rate, valued the way each bank publishes.

Card

Earn rate

Earned

Value at stated redemption

HDFC Regalia Gold

5 Reward Points per ₹200

2,500 points

₹1,250 on SmartBuy (1.25%); ₹375 as cashback

Scapia Axis Bank

10 coins per ₹100

10,000 coins

₹2,000 on the Scapia app (2%)

Kotak Air+

2 Air Miles per ₹100

2,000 miles

₹2,000 on Unbox; 1,000 partner miles at 2:1

HSBC TravelOne

2 points per ₹100

2,000 points

2,000 air miles at 1:1; rupee value varies

These are base-rate figures. Accelerated categories, caps and exclusions change the picture, and fees are not deducted. To see which spends earn nothing, read Why You Sometimes Earn Zero Reward Points.

Checklist

  • Find every redemption option for your card and its value per point.

  • Avoid statement cashback on travel cards; it is usually the lowest value.

  • Check monthly redemption caps and part-payment limits.

  • Check transfer ratios, yearly caps and transfer fees before moving points.

  • Transfer only after confirming award seats or rooms.

  • Note voucher validity dates the day they are credited.

  • Check which spends earn zero points.

  • Recheck terms before each big redemption; they change.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Reading the earn rate as cashback

10 coins per ₹100 on Scapia is 2% back, not 10%.

Mistake 2: Cashing travel points as statement credit

On Regalia Gold, 1,000 points are worth ₹500 on SmartBuy flights but ₹150 as cashback.

Mistake 3: Transferring points without a booking

Transfers cannot be reversed, and partners and ratios can change.

Mistake 4: Ignoring transfer caps

Atlas allows only 30,000 EDGE Miles a year to all Group A partners combined.

Mistake 5: Letting vouchers expire

IndiGo co-brand vouchers last 6 months. Plan the trip before the voucher arrives.

FAQs

How do travel credit card rewards work?

You earn points, miles or a partner's currency on spends, often more on travel bookings, and redeem them for flights, hotels or transfers. The value depends on the redemption you choose.

What is the difference between miles and points?

Points are the bank's own currency, redeemable on its portal or transferable. Miles usually belong to an airline programme, though some banks call their own points "miles", such as Axis EDGE Miles.

What is one travel reward point worth?

It varies by card and redemption. HDFC values Regalia Gold points at ₹0.50 on SmartBuy flights and hotels; Axis values Atlas EDGE Miles at ₹1 on Travel EDGE.

Are transferred points refundable?

Not on Axis Bank cards. Axis's terms say transferred points cannot be reversed or refunded.

Do airline miles have a fixed rupee value?

Usually not. Axis's IndiGo terms say BluChips have no monetary value, and BOBCARD says the same of Etihad miles.

Are travel vouchers worth their face value?

Only if you use them in full before they expire. IndiGo co-brand vouchers, for example, work on one journey and forfeit any unused balance.
