A detailed India-focused NordVPN review covering benchmarksutra scores, streaming, Netflix, privacy, travel use, India server status, public Wi-Fi protection, pricing value, refund policy, and whether NordVPN is worth buying for Indian users.
Quick Verdict
NordVPN is an A Tier VPN for Indian users who want a strong all-round VPN for streaming, privacy, public Wi-Fi, travel, and general online protection. It is better value than many premium VPNs, but Indian users should note that NordVPN has shut down its Indian servers after CERT-In rules, so users who specifically need an Indian IP address should verify current availability before buying.
Pros
- Strong all-round VPN positioning
- Good fit for streaming and Netflix users
- Strong privacy positioning with no-logs audit history
- 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscriptions
- Large global server network
- Useful security features such as kill switch
- Better value profile than ultra-premium VPNs
- Strong alternative to random free VPNs for serious use
Cons
- Indian servers were shut down after CERT-In rules
- - Indian IP access should be verified before buying
- Netflix access can still change
- Users may need to switch servers for streaming
- Renewal price must be checked before buying
- Some advanced features may vary by device/platform
- Not ideal for users who only need a short-term one-show VPN
Best For
Indian users who want a strong all-round VPN, Netflix users, streaming users, privacy-focused users, public Wi-Fi users, travellers, remote workers, and buyers who want better price-to-performance balance than premium-only VPNs.
Avoid If
You specifically need an Indian VPN server or Indian IP access, want a free VPN, expect guaranteed Netflix access forever, dislike server switching, or want the simplest premium app experience over everything else.
Our POV
NordVPN is one of the strongest all-round VPN options for Indian users who want a paid VPN for streaming, privacy, public Wi-Fi, travel, and general online protection.
It is not the cheapest VPN.
It is also not the simplest “premium-only” pick like ExpressVPN.
NordVPN’s strength is balance.
It gives Indian users a strong mix of streaming support, privacy features, security tools, refund protection, and broad global server coverage.
The biggest India-specific limitation is clear:
NordVPN has shut down its Indian servers after India’s CERT-In rules. So if your main requirement is an Indian VPN server or Indian IP access, verify current availability inside the NordVPN app before buying.
Current benchmarksutra verdict:
Category | Score | Grade |
|---|---|---|
General VPN Score | 88/100 | A Tier |
Streaming VPN Score | 82/100 | A Tier |
Privacy VPN Score | 88/100 | A Tier |
India Relevance Score | 72/100 | B Tier |
Value Score for Indian Users | 82/100 | A Tier |
Bottom line:
NordVPN is an A Tier all-round VPN for Indian users. It is better suited for users who want streaming, privacy, security features, and value in one package. But it is not ideal if you specifically need India servers or guaranteed Indian IP access.

What Is NordVPN?#
NordVPN is a paid VPN service positioned around privacy, streaming, security features, fast global servers, and multi-device protection.
Its official site positions NordVPN as a premium privacy and security tool with a large global server network, streaming support, threat-protection features, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Official sources:
For Indian users, the important question is not whether NordVPN is famous.
The important question is:
Is NordVPN worth paying for in India when ExpressVPN, PureVPN, TotalVPN, and free VPNs also exist?
The answer depends on your use case.

NordVPN | 88/100 | A Tier |
NordVPN gets A Tier because it is strong across speed positioning, streaming support, privacy features, refund clarity, and value.
It does not reach S Tier because India server support is weak after NordVPN shut down Indian servers, and streaming access can still require server switching.

VPN | Streaming VPN Score | Grade |

NordVPN is a strong streaming VPN candidate.
It is especially useful for users who want one VPN for Netflix, general streaming, privacy, and security instead of buying a VPN only for one show.

VPN | Privacy VPN Score | Grade |

NordVPN | 88/100 | A Tier |
NordVPN scores strongly for privacy because of its no-log positioning, audit history, kill switch support, and security-feature depth.
NordVPN says its no-logs claims were independently assessed again by Deloitte, and NordVPN’s support pages explain kill switch behavior.
Official sources:
That said, privacy-focused users should still verify the latest audit details, app behavior, DNS leak results, WebRTC leak behavior, and device-specific kill switch behavior before relying on any VPN for sensitive use.
NordVPN India Server Status
This is the most important India-specific point in this review.
NordVPN says it shut down its Indian servers after India’s CERT-In rules.
Official source:
This means Indian users should not assume that NordVPN can provide Indian VPN server access.
Question | NordVPN India Status |
|---|---|
Does NordVPN have Indian servers? | NordVPN says it shut down Indian servers |
Why were Indian servers shut down? | NordVPN cites CERT-In rules |
Does this affect servers outside India? | NordVPN says it does not affect servers outside India |
Should Indian users verify Indian IP access before buying? | Yes |
Is lack of India servers a deal-breaker? | Only if you specifically need Indian IP access |
This is different from ExpressVPN, which offers virtual India server locations.
If your main need is Indian IP access while abroad, NordVPN may not be the right first choice unless current app availability confirms otherwise.

Why NordVPN Shut Down Indian Servers Matters
India’s CERT-In directions created customer-information retention requirements for VPN service providers and other covered entities.
Official source:
Several VPN companies changed their India server strategy after these rules.
For Indian users, this matters because “VPN for India” can mean different things:
Need | What to Check |
|---|---|
You are in India and want global VPN servers | NordVPN can still be useful |
You are abroad and need Indian IP access | Verify carefully; NordVPN says Indian servers were shut down |
You want privacy after CERT-In rules | NordVPN’s India server shutdown may be seen positively by privacy-focused users |
You want India OTT access abroad | Do not assume without testing |
You want banking access abroad | Do not rely on VPN claims without testing |
NordVPN is still relevant for Indian users.
But it is weaker for users who specifically need India IP access.
NordVPN for Netflix and Streaming
NordVPN is a strong streaming VPN candidate.
It has official streaming pages and Netflix troubleshooting documentation.
Official sources:
For Indian users, NordVPN may be useful for:
Netflix US
Netflix UK
Netflix while travelling
Other global streaming platforms
Streaming on laptop and mobile
Users who also want privacy and security features
But no VPN can guarantee permanent Netflix access.
NordVPN’s own support documentation includes troubleshooting steps for cases where Netflix does not work with NordVPN.
That is not a weakness by itself.
It is a reminder that streaming VPN access changes.
For Netflix users, NordVPN should be judged by:
Streaming Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
Netflix region tested | US, UK, India, Japan, etc. behave differently |
Server used | One server may work while another fails |
Device tested | Laptop, phone, TV, browser can behave differently |
Playback quality | Loading is not enough |
Repeat test | One successful test is weak evidence |
Error messages | Proxy/VPN errors matter |
Refund policy | Needed if streaming fails |
Renewal price | Long-term value matters |
For the full Netflix comparison, read:
Best VPN for Netflix India: NordVPN vs ExpressVPN vs PureVPN vs TotalVPN Compared
NordVPN for Privacy
NordVPN is one of the stronger privacy-focused VPN options in the consumer VPN market.
Its privacy strength comes from:
Privacy Factor | NordVPN Position |
|---|---|
No-log positioning | Strong official no-log positioning |
Independent audits | NordVPN has published audit updates |
Kill switch | Official support documentation available |
Server strategy in India | Indian servers shut down after CERT-In rules |
Security features | NordVPN positions itself strongly around security |
Documentation | Many official support pages are available |
NordVPN is suitable for normal privacy use, public Wi-Fi protection, travel privacy, and general online protection.
But no VPN should be treated as magic anonymity software.
A VPN does not protect you from:
Phishing links
Fake banking pages
OTP scams
Malware downloads
Fraud apps
Weak passwords
Logged-in account tracking
Browser fingerprinting
If you are new to VPNs, read:

benchmarksutra VPN Testing Methodology
NordVPN for Travel
NordVPN is useful for travellers who want safer public Wi-Fi use, global server access, and a strong privacy/security layer.
It may be useful if you travel abroad and want:
Safer hotel Wi-Fi browsing
Global VPN server access
Streaming access while travelling
Privacy on airport or cafe Wi-Fi
Easy app use on laptop and phone
Security features beyond basic VPN routing
But NordVPN is weaker if your main travel requirement is Indian IP access.
Because NordVPN says it shut down its Indian servers, Indian users who need India-specific access while abroad should verify current availability before buying.
For travel users, check:
Travel Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
Target country servers | Useful for regional access |
India server availability | Important if you need Indian IP |
Mobile app stability | Travel use is often mobile-first |
Refund policy | Lets you test before travel |
Support quality | Useful if servers fail abroad |
Speed from your location | Depends on country and ISP |
Streaming behavior | OTT apps can behave differently abroad |
Do not assume any VPN will always work with every Indian banking app or OTT app abroad.
Banking apps and streaming apps may flag VPNs, unusual locations, or account behavior.
NordVPN for Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi is one of NordVPN’s strongest practical use cases.
If you use Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, cafes, coworking spaces, railway stations, colleges, or public places, a VPN can add a useful protection layer.
NordVPN is a strong fit for this use case because:
Public Wi-Fi Need | Why NordVPN Fits |
|---|---|
Kill switch | Helps prevent unprotected access if VPN drops |
Privacy positioning | Stronger than random free VPNs |
Security features | More than basic IP masking |
Device support | Useful for phone and laptop users |
Support documentation | Helpful when travelling |
Refund window | Lets users test before committing |
But a VPN does not protect you from everything.
It does not stop:
Phishing links
Fake banking pages
OTP scams
Malware downloads
Fraud calls
Weak passwords
Unsafe apps

NordVPN for Torrenting
NordVPN can be considered for privacy-sensitive P2P use if the user checks the right safeguards first.
A VPN does not make piracy legal.
Torrenting open-source files or public-domain content is different from downloading copyrighted movies, software, games, or shows without permission.
For torrenting or P2P-style use, check:
Factor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
P2P support | Not every VPN handles P2P equally |
Kill switch | Prevents IP exposure if VPN disconnects |
DNS leak protection | Reduces privacy leakage |
WebRTC leak protection | Important for browser-related leaks |
Speed | Large downloads need stable performance |
No-log policy | Privacy-sensitive use case |
Jurisdiction | Legal environment matters |
For legal context, read:
Is VPN Legal in India? Rules, Myths, CERT-In Guidelines and What Users Should Know
NordVPN Pricing and Value for Indian Users
NordVPN’s value case is stronger than many ultra-premium VPNs.
It is still a paid VPN, so Indian users should not judge it only by the advertised monthly-equivalent price.
Before buying, check:
Pricing Factor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
First-term price | Initial cost |
Total upfront payment | What you pay today |
Renewal price | Long-term cost |
Plan duration | Monthly, annual, or multi-year |
Auto-renewal | Surprise billing risk |
Refund policy | Buyer protection |
Cancellation process | Exit difficulty |
NordVPN may be worth it if you value:
Streaming support
Strong privacy features
Public Wi-Fi protection
Security extras
Global server access
Refund window
Better value than premium-only VPNs
It may not be worth it if you want:
Free VPN
Indian server access
One-month streaming workaround
Guaranteed Netflix forever
Lowest possible cost
A VPN only for one short-term show
For Indian buyers, NordVPN is a strong all-round paid VPN.
Not a free or ultra-budget VPN.
NordVPN Refund Policy
NordVPN says it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscriptions.
Official source:
This is important because streaming access and app behavior can vary by user, device, ISP, country, and platform.
If you are buying NordVPN mainly for Netflix, travel, or public Wi-Fi, use the refund window to test:
Your device
Your target streaming app
Your target country server
Speed during your normal usage time
App stability
Kill switch behavior
Cancellation flow
Whether your main use case actually works
Do not wait until after the refund window to test your main use case.
NordVPN App and Device Support
NordVPN supports major platforms and is positioned as a mainstream consumer VPN for multi-device use.
For Indian users, device support matters because VPN use often happens across:
Android phone
iPhone
Windows laptop
macOS laptop
Smart TV or streaming device
Browser
Router or advanced setup
A VPN with poor app support becomes irritating quickly.
NordVPN is stronger for users who want a broad, all-round VPN experience across devices.
However, users should verify feature availability on their exact device.
Some features can vary across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, browser extensions, and TV devices.
NordVPN vs Free VPNs
NordVPN is much stronger than a typical free VPN for serious use.
Free VPNs often come with limits such as:
Data caps
Speed caps
Fewer servers
Ads
Weak streaming access
Poor support
Unclear privacy policies
No reliable kill switch
Weak leak protection
NordVPN is a better fit if you care about:
Streaming reliability
Privacy features
Public Wi-Fi protection
Support
Security extras
Refund window
Multi-device use
But a free VPN may be enough if you only want to learn how VPNs work or do low-risk browsing.

Free VPN vs Paid VPN: Which One Should Indian Users Choose?
NordVPN vs ExpressVPN
NordVPN and ExpressVPN are both strong A Tier VPNs, but they fit different users.
Factor | NordVPN | ExpressVPN |
|---|---|---|
General Position | Strong all-round VPN | Premium simplicity-focused VPN |
Streaming Score | 82/100 | 84/100 |
General VPN Score | 88/100 | 86/100 |
Privacy Score | 88/100 | 85/100 |
India Relevance | Weaker for India IP because Indian servers were shut down | Stronger for Indian IP because ExpressVPN offers virtual India locations |
Value | Stronger value profile | More premium-priced |
Best For | Users who want streaming + privacy + value | Users who want premium app simplicity and virtual India IP |
Avoid If | You need Indian servers/IP access | You want lowest price |
NordVPN is better if you want one strong VPN for streaming, privacy, public Wi-Fi, and overall value.
ExpressVPN is better if you want a more premium, simple VPN experience and virtual India IP access.

NordVPN | 82/100 | A Tier | Best all-round pick |
PureVPN | 74/100 | B Tier | Value-focused pick |
TotalVPN | 66/100 | C Tier | Budget experiment pick |
NordVPN is better if you want a single VPN for streaming, privacy, speed, and value.

PureVPN is better if you want a lower-cost paid option.
TotalVPN is only for budget experimentation, not Netflix-first reliability.

NordVPN is suitable for:
User Type | Why NordVPN Fits |
|---|---|
Streaming users | Strong streaming positioning and global server network |
Netflix users | A Tier streaming score, but still needs current testing |
Privacy-conscious users | Strong no-log and audit positioning |
Public Wi-Fi users | Useful security layer on unsafe networks |

Travellers | Useful global VPN option, except India IP needs |
Value-focused paid VPN buyers | Stronger value profile than premium-only VPNs |
Users comparing ExpressVPN alternatives | NordVPN is the strongest all-round alternative |
Who Should Avoid NordVPN?
Avoid or reconsider NordVPN if:
User Type | Why It May Not Fit |
|---|---|
Users who need Indian servers | NordVPN says Indian servers were shut down |
Users who need Indian IP abroad | Current availability should be verified first |
Free-VPN users | NordVPN is a paid product |
One-show streamers | Cost may not be justified |
Users expecting guaranteed Netflix forever | No VPN can promise that |
Users unwilling to test during refund window | Streaming behavior can change |
Users who want the simplest premium app above all else | ExpressVPN may feel more premium/simple |
NordVPN Red Flags to Check Before Buying
NordVPN is strong, but users should still check these before paying:
Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
Current price | VPN pricing changes |
Renewal price | Long-term cost may differ |
Refund eligibility | Purchase channel may affect refund handling |
Target streaming platform | Netflix, Hotstar, BBC iPlayer, etc. behave differently |
Target device | Phone, laptop, TV, router support varies |
India server need | NordVPN says Indian servers were shut down |
Privacy audit status | Advanced users should verify latest audit details |
Speed from your location | Your ISP and location matter |
Cancellation flow | Avoid auto-renewal surprises |
Do not buy any VPN blindly.
Even a strong VPN should be tested for your use case.
NordVPN Alternatives
NordVPN is not the only VPN Indian users compare.
The main alternatives in the current benchmarksutra VPN cluster are:
Alternative | Better For |
|---|---|
ExpressVPN | Premium app simplicity and virtual India IP access |
PureVPN | Budget-conscious paid VPN users |
TotalVPN | Budget experimenters |
Free VPNs | Low-risk testing or casual browsing only |
