Summary

Axis Bank is listing the Privilege Credit Card with a ₹NIL joining and annual fee on the Visa network for a limited period. This guide explains what users must check before applying, including the lost activation benefit, reward exclusions, lounge and movie conditions, and charges that still apply.

Quick Verdict

Axis Bank is currently showing the Privilege Credit Card with a ₹NIL joining fee and ₹NIL annual fee on the Visa network.

Axis Bank's own fees table labels this a limited period offer on Visa Network.

That makes this one of the more useful no-fee Axis cards right now.

But there is one trade-off most users will miss.

The 12,500 EDGE REWARD points activation benefit (worth ₹2,500) is not available on free or first-year-free cards. A lifetime free card means no welcome points.

The simple rule:

Take the lifetime free version if you want a long-term, no-cost 1% card. Take the paid version only if you value the ₹2,500 activation points more than future annual fees.

Before applying, check:

  • whether the offer is still live on the Axis Bank page

  • whether your application is on the Visa variant

  • whether the fees table shows ₹NIL for both joining and annual fee

  • whether the activation benefit applies to you

  • reward exclusions

  • lounge spend condition

  • movie offer spend condition

  • forex and DCC charges

  • whether you can pay the full bill every month

What Is the Axis Privilege Lifetime Free News?

The news is about the fee on the Axis Bank Privilege Credit Card.

In simple language:

For a limited period, Axis Bank is listing the Visa variant of the Privilege Credit Card with no joining fee and no annual fee from the second year onwards.

On Axis Bank's official fees table, both lines read:

Fee

What Axis Bank Shows

Standard Joining Fee

₹NIL (Limited period offer on Visa Network)

Standard Annual Fee (2nd year onwards)

₹NIL (Limited period offer on Visa Network)

Add-on Card Joining Fee

Nil

Add-on Card Annual Fee

Nil

Normally, the card carries an annual fee of ₹1,500, which is reversed only if you spend ₹5 lakh in the previous card anniversary year.

So the offer removes the biggest cost of holding this card.

But three words matter here:

  • limited period — the offer can end without much notice

  • Visa Network — other variants may still carry fees

  • standard — your final card terms decide what you actually pay

Axis Bank's page does not state an end date for the offer.

Treat it as live only if the fees table shows ₹NIL on the day you apply.

Why This News Matters

The Privilege card is a mid-range Axis card.

It gives a base 1% reward rate, a spend milestone, domestic lounge access and a movie offer.

The ₹1,500 annual fee was the main reason many users skipped it.

Reaching ₹5 lakh in yearly spends to get that fee reversed is hard for most salaried users.

Annual Card Spend

Old Situation

With Lifetime Free

All rewards are net gain

₹2,50,000

The users who gain most are the ones who spend below ₹5 lakh a year.

For them, the annual fee was a real cost. Now it is gone.

To see why fee waivers are harder than they look, read How Credit Card Fee Waivers Work.

What Users Must Verify Officially

Before applying, verify these details on Axis Bank's official Privilege Credit Card page and the card's terms.

On the offer side, check:

  • Standard Joining Fee shows ₹NIL

  • Standard Annual Fee (2nd year onwards) shows ₹NIL

  • the ₹NIL note mentions Visa Network

  • the application form is for the Visa variant

  • whether the offer applies to your application channel

  • whether existing Axis cardholders are covered

  • whether the lifetime free status is written in your welcome kit or MITC

On the card side, check:

  • activation benefit eligibility

  • EDGE REWARDS earn rate

  • reward exclusions

  • milestone terms

  • lounge eligibility condition

  • movie offer condition

  • forex markup and DCC markup

  • surcharges on rent, wallet, fuel, utilities and education

  • reward redemption fee

On your side, check:

  • do you need another card at all?

  • will the new card help your spending pattern?

  • can you pay the full bill every month?

  • will a new application affect another card you plan to apply for?

Save a screenshot of the fees table with the date before you apply.

If the bank later charges a fee, that screenshot is your proof.

The Visa-Only Condition

The ₹NIL fee note on Axis Bank's page is tied to the Visa network.

The Privilege card has also been issued on other networks. Axis Bank's page separately mentions Amex Privilege offers.

Scenario

What It Means

You apply and get a Visa card

Offer should apply if live

You are issued a different network

Fees may not be ₹NIL

You already hold a Privilege card on another network

Do not assume your fee is waived

You convert or upgrade an existing card

Conversion terms may differ

Network also affects where the card works and which offers you get.

For network differences, read Visa vs Mastercard vs RuPay vs Amex.

The Activation Benefit Trade-Off

This is the most important part of this news.

Axis Bank offers an activation benefit on the Privilege card:

  • 12,500 EDGE REWARD points

  • worth ₹2,500 against vouchers

  • given on levy of the joining fee

  • and completion of the first transaction within 30 days of card issuance

But Axis Bank's terms also say that free cards, first-year-free cards and priority segment customers are not eligible for this benefit.

So the choice looks like this:

Route

Year 1

Year 2 onwards (spend below ₹5 lakh)

Paid card

Pay joining fee, get ₹2,500 points

Pay ₹1,500 + GST every year

Lifetime free card

Pay nothing, get no activation points

Pay nothing

Example, assuming a ₹1,500 joining fee plus 18% GST:

Period

Paid Card Net

Lifetime Free Net

Better Option

End of Year 1

₹2,500 − ₹1,770 = +₹730

₹0

Paid

End of Year 2

+₹730 − ₹1,770 = −₹1,040

₹0

Lifetime free

End of Year 3

−₹2,810

₹0

Lifetime free

The paid route wins only in the first year.

From the second year, the lifetime free route pulls ahead, unless you reach ₹5 lakh in yearly spends and get the fee reversed.

Also note: the ₹2,500 value holds only if you redeem points against vouchers. A reward redemption fee may also apply.

For point value basics, read How to Calculate the Real Value of 1 Reward Point.

Rewards: What You Earn and What You Do Not

The Privilege card earns 10 EDGE REWARD points on every ₹200 spent, domestic or international.

Axis Bank values 10,000 points at ₹2,000 in its milestone wording. That puts one point at about ₹0.20.

So the base reward rate works out to:

10 points × ₹0.20 = ₹2 on every ₹200 = about 1%

But many categories earn zero points.

No EDGE REWARD points on spends at:

  • insurance

  • rent

  • fuel

  • educational services

  • utilities

  • government MCCs

  • wallet loads

  • gold and jewellery

  • gift cards

  • bridge fees, road fees and tolls

And if you convert a transaction to EMI, the points earned on it are debited. If the EMI is later cancelled, those points are not credited back.

Example on ₹1,00,000 of yearly spends:

Spend Mix

Eligible Spend

Lounge, Movie and Fuel Benefits: Read the Conditions

Domestic lounge access

  • 2 complimentary visits per calendar quarter

  • at select domestic lounges

  • only if you spent ₹50,000 in the previous 3 months

That is about ₹16,700 a month just to unlock lounge access.

Buy one get one movie offer

  • 100% off the second ticket on the District app

  • up to ₹250 off, once a month

  • from 1 November 2026, you need ₹25,000 of spends in the previous 3 calendar months

  • for a new card, this spend condition is waived in the month of issuance and the next 3 calendar months

Axis Bank also says EMI transactions count only at the monthly instalment amount for this spend check, not the full purchase value.

Fuel surcharge refund

  • 1% surcharge refunded on fuel transactions between ₹400 and ₹4,000

  • maximum ₹400 per statement cycle

  • GST on the surcharge is not refunded

  • no reward points on fuel

Fees That Still Apply

Lifetime free removes the joining and annual fee only.

Other charges remain. From Axis Bank's fees table:

Charge

Finance charges

3.75% per month (55.55% per annum)

Foreign currency transaction fee

3.5%

Dynamic Currency Conversion markup

3.5% plus taxes (revised from 1.5% w.e.f. 28 August 2026)

Cash withdrawal fee

2.5% (minimum ₹500)

Rent surcharge

1% of rent transaction

Wallet load fee

1% on ₹10,000+ per statement cycle

Fuel transaction fee

1% on ₹50,000+ per statement cycle

Utility transaction fee

1% on ₹25,000+ per statement cycle

Education fee via third-party apps

1%

Late payment fee

Up to ₹1,300 depending on amount due

GST applies on all fees, interest and charges.

The card is weak for international use. A 3.5% forex markup plus GST is more than the 1% you earn back.

Existing Privilege Cardholders: What Changes for You?

Axis Bank's page lists the ₹NIL fee as a standard fee for the Visa network during the offer period.

It does not clearly say what happens to existing cardholders already paying ₹1,500 a year.

Your Situation

What to Do

Existing Visa Privilege cardholder

Check your next renewal statement or ask Axis Bank in writing

Existing cardholder on another network

Do not assume the waiver applies

Close to ₹5 lakh yearly spend

Fee may be reversed anyway

Fee charged and spend is low

Ask Axis Bank for a waiver before paying

Do not close an old card just to apply again for the free version. Closing an older card can shorten your credit history and lower your total credit limit.

Should You Apply?

Apply only if all three conditions are met.

Condition 1: The offer is live and on Visa

The fees table shows ₹NIL for joining and annual fee, and you are applying for the Visa variant.

Condition 2: The card fits your spending

Most of your spends fall in categories that earn EDGE REWARD points.

Condition 3: You pay the full bill every month

Finance charges of 55.55% a year wipe out any reward value.

  • users who want a no-cost backup card with 1% rewards

  • users spending around ₹2.5 lakh a year on eligible categories

  • users who already bank with Axis

  • first-time Axis cardholders building a relationship with the bank

  • users who want occasional domestic lounge access

  • moviegoers who meet the District spend condition

  • users who want free add-on cards for family

The strongest user profile is:

A domestic spender with ₹2–4 lakh of yearly eligible spends, who pays in full, and who does not need the one-time ₹2,500 activation points.

For family cards, read Add-on Credit Cards Explained.

Who Should Avoid This Offer?

Avoid or think twice if:

  • most of your spends are rent, fuel, utilities, insurance or education

  • you spend heavily abroad

  • you already have a better 1%+ lifetime free card

  • you carry a balance on credit cards

  • you only want the welcome points

  • you are applying for several cards in a short time

  • you were recently rejected for a card

A free card is still a credit line. Do not take it only because it costs nothing.

If you were rejected before, read 5 Common Reasons Your Credit Card Was Rejected.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Assuming every Privilege variant is free

The ₹NIL note is tied to the Visa network.

Mistake 2: Expecting the activation points

Free and first-year-free cards are not eligible for the 12,500-point activation benefit.

Mistake 3: Assuming the offer has no end

Axis Bank calls it a limited period offer. Check on the day you apply.

Mistake 4: Counting rewards on excluded spends

Rent, fuel, utilities, insurance, education, wallet, government, gold and gift card spends earn nothing.

Mistake 5: Counting lounge access you will not unlock

Lounge access needs ₹50,000 of spend in the previous 3 months.

Mistake 6: Using the card abroad

A 3.5% forex markup plus GST costs more than the 1% you earn.

Mistake 7: Converting big purchases to EMI

Points on EMI-converted transactions are debited.

Mistake 8: Closing an older card for this one

This can hurt your credit history and total limit.

Mistake 9: Not saving proof

Save the fees table screenshot, application reference and welcome kit.

Benchmarksutra Verdict

The Axis Bank Privilege Credit Card is much better value without the ₹1,500 annual fee.

It works well if:

  • the ₹NIL offer is live when you apply

  • you get the Visa variant

  • most of your spends earn EDGE REWARDS

  • you can reach the ₹2.5 lakh milestone

  • you pay the full bill every month

It is weak if:

  • you spend mainly on excluded categories

  • you spend abroad often

  • you only wanted the ₹2,500 activation points

  • you already spend ₹5 lakh+ and could get the fee reversed anyway

  • you carry a balance

Final rule:

A lifetime free card is worth holding only if its rewards fit your real spending. ₹0 fee is the starting point, not the reason to apply.

Before applying, verify the fees table, card terms and activation benefit terms on Axis Bank's official page.
